National Christmas Bird Counting Weeks | Cleveland Southside Moms

Each year, the Audubon Society hosts a National Christmas Bird Count. Regions around the country can participate each year. This year is the 121st annual count and there are locations around the southside that are participating. If you would like to contribute to the count, you can participate in the field at official counting locations, or you can count at your own feeders in your yard and report your numbers. Here are the local contacts for the different counting areas in our region. The count goes from Dec. 14th to January 5th.  Click here to see the map and locate the count area you reside in. https://audubon.maps.arcgis.com/apps/View/index.html?appid=ac275eeb01434cedb1c5dcd0fd3fc7b4

WE ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO HAVE NEW BIRDERS TO HELP WITH THE COUNT. WE PRE-ASSIGN COUNT SECTIONS AND PREFER 2 BIRDERS PER TEAM. MOST TEAMS DO MOSTLY DRIVING WITH A LITTLE WALKING. TEAMS WITH THEIR OWN ASSIGNED SECTION OF THE CIRCLE LEAVE FROM HOME TO COVER THEIR SECTION. WE HAVE A GROUP THAT WALKS THE TRAILS AT QUAIL HOLLOW STATE PARK AND THEY USUALLY MEET AT 8AM AT THE PARK. THERE IS A STARK PARK NATURALIST THAT LEADS THE WALKERS. IF INTERESTED IN HELPING WITH THE COUNT, PLEASE CONTACT ME IDEALLY PRIOR TO DECEMBER 10TH VIA E-MAIL OR PHONE BUT IF’S AFTER DEC. 10 CONTACT ME BY PHONE AND I CAN PUT YOU WITH SOMEONE ELSE. I WILL SEND YOU A MAP OF YOUR SECTION, INSTRUCTIONS AND COUNT DOCUMENTS. OFFICIALLY COUNT TIMES ARE 8.00 AM TO 5.00 PM.HOWEVER, SOME BIRDERS GO OWLING DURING THE NIGHT. IF YOU LIVE WITHIN THE CIRCLE AND JUST WANT TO COUNT BIRDS AT YOUR FEEDERS / ON YOUR PROPERTY, WE WELCOME THAT AS WELL. CONTACT Ronnie Macko at QUAILHOLLOWCBC@GMAIL.COM. OR 330-935-0952 (PLEASE LEAVE A MESSAGE IF I DON’T ANSWER AND I WILL CALL YOU BACK). I LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU.

Comments:
Re-start of OH1T. For 2020, we will be conducting a socially distant, Covid-19 safe count by encouraging our participants to drive in separate vehicles when possible, wear masks when in proximity to others, or in public parks, and not conducting a social gathering after the count to tally up results and have birding fellowship. In future years, The Canton Audubon Society will help us acquire a meeting room for the tally and birding fellowship. For further questions, please use the link on the Audubon website.
